About Michael Kaniu

Michael Kaniu is a Business Executive with over 28 years of experience in Africa and the USA who can work effectively at all levels in organisations. He is currently an affordable housing developer and board member of the Kenya Property Developers Association (KPDA). He is also a Sector Board Member at Kenya Private Secor Alliance (KEPSA) fostering public policy advocacy in Land and Housing.

Before forming his own real estate company, Natureville Homes 14 years ago, Michael held Director-level roles in business execution at Big Tech Software Companies like SAP, Microsoft, and Sybase where he was the managing director. He has also worked in Engineering Companies; Gath Management (Kenya) and McKinstry Engineering (USA) in Building Mechanical Design and Real Estate Technology (Protecth) under Properbly Ventures.

Michael holds an MBA (TQM) from Leicester University (UK), and an Applied Science degree from ITT Technical Institute (USA). In addition, he holds a post Graduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

About Development Workshop Namibia (DWN)

DWN is a registered Namibian NGO with a focus on sustainable urban development, informal settlements, and the disadvantaged communities that reside in them. DWN works through partnership agreements with local authorities and in support of national development goals. Our four main programs are:

  1. Housing for All: for the provision of low-cost residential land for housing
  2. Play for All: an ECD programme with focus on informal settlements
  3. Urban Sanitation: using a Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach
  4. Urban infrastructure: implementing bulk infrastructure projects that benefit the urban poor

Our vision is to contribute to sustainable urban development and reduced urban poverty in Southern Africa.

In her 20+ years with OPIC/DFC she and her team have committed nearly $2.5 billion in debt transactions representing 31 countries. She was previously President of Societas – International Institute for Real Estate Finance, a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. and served as Senior Director – Mortgage Bankers Association, responsible for liaison between international and U.S. mortgage entities.
